Only 27 per cent of 1027 people polled for a Massey University study said they were certain God existed, compared to 39 per cent who believed in fortune tellers and faith healers.
Forty per cent of respondents had no religious affiliation up 29 points from surveys in 1991 and 1998. However, 60 per cent would prefer children to have religious education in state primary schools, with most support for teaching about all faiths.

Of the 1027 people surveyed:
About a quarter believed in good luck charms, reincarnation and star signs.
51 per cent believed in heaven, but only 36 per cent believed in hell.
Half said they prayed at least several times a year.
40 per cent believed sex between adults of the same gender was wrong - down 10 per cent from 1998.
